Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program at Boston University expects to hire multiple full-time non-tenure-track Lecturers in Writing to begin in the fall of 2022. Together, these lecturers will form a cohort of faculty teaching topic-based writing classes on themes of social, racial, and/or environmental justice. New hires will join colleagues actively working across disciplines to develop innovative and responsive pedagogy and initiatives that reflect the Writing Program’s core values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

At least one of the positions in this cohort will be dedicated primarily to teaching courses that specifically serve students for whom English is a second or other language. Applicants who wish to be considered for the multilingual writing position should make their experience and credentials in ESL/ELL/TESOL clear. Successful applicants for this position will be familiar with current scholarship in second language writing, intercultural rhetoric, global Englishes, or other related fields.

For all of the positions, we seek applications from candidates who have significant experience teaching writing and serving students or communities of underrepresented and minoritized groups, who can demonstrate success in equity-oriented pedagogy, and who show potential to advance the program’s diversity efforts. The program is especially interested in candidates whose teaching of writing draws upon anti-racist and global frameworks from diverse disciplines and critical approaches, including race and ethnicity and their intersections with environmental justice, gender, and sexuality. All applicants should be committed to teaching writing in ways that equitably serve BU’s many multilingual students. We strongly encourage candidates from historically marginalized groups to apply.

The Writing Program is an independent instructional unit with more than fifty full-time unionized Lecturers. We offer a two-semester sequence of theme-based writing seminars through which most BU undergraduates satisfy their writing requirements, and we prepare international undergraduate students for writing in their college classes through an additional two-course sequence for multilingual writers. More information about the Arts & Sciences Writing Program is available at http://www.bu.edu/writingprogram/ and at https://www.bu.edu/teaching-writing/.

Responsibilities include teaching three theme-based first-year writing seminars (16-18 students each) or three sections of our classes for multilingual writers (15 students each) per semester, as well as participating in program service and professional development activities. BU offers a rich range of resources for professional development and course enhancement. The initial term of appointment is two years, with the possibility of renewal and promotion.
