CMS MREFC 2024 Summer Internship Program for Underrepresented Minority Undergraduate Students. The CMS MREFC Summer Internship program is aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the STEM fields. Students from underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply.

The CMS MREFC Upgrade Project has sub-projects at several institutions, please review information about each hosting institution on our webpage. Applicants may apply to more than one institution. 

Eligibility: 
 
  • No prior experience in this area of specialty is required. Training and mentorship will be provided.
  • Qualifications include a C or higher GPA, an interest in high-energy physics, and a willingness to learn new skills. 
  • The Internship program is open only to US citizens and permanent residents. If accepted, you will be required to show proof of citizenship or permanent residency. 
  • This program is intended primarily for sophomore and junior students in science and engineering. In exceptional cases first year students could have enough familiarity with physics, engineering, or computer science to profit from their research experience. 
  • Students who have not yet enrolled as undergraduates are not eligible. In some cases seniors may be considered, depending on employment rules at the hosting institutions (in some cases graduating seniors cannot be appointed into undergraduate internship positions). 
  • If accepted, you will have to show proof of health insurance coverage for the period of the Internship Program. 
Your application should include: 

  1. Personal statement, approximately one page in length, describing:

    1. your experience, skills, interests, and goals;

    2. host institutions to which you are applying;

    3. what would participating in a STEM research project mean to you, from the perspective of your identify; and

    4. what is it in your lived experience that has influenced you to either engage with or become passionate about issues surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields. 

  2. A list of courses taken and your overall GPA, or an unofficial transcript.

  3. One letter of recommendation from a professor that is familiar with your academic performance and your potential to contribute to research.


Applications completed after midnight EST February 16, 2024 may not be considered. Selections will be made on or around March 1, 2024. If you receive an offer letter from us, you will be asked to inform us of your decision within the timeline specified in the letter.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
