Job description: We're hiring a Technician/Associate in Research! We are a collegial, basic science research group at Duke University with a wet-lab in the French Family Science Center and a dry-lab in LSRC. Our lab focuses on experimental and computational studies of protein structure and design. Your responsibilities will include both administrative tasks (e.g., safety, compliance, lab organization, ordering, negotiating with vendors, etc.) and original research, including the opportunity to conduct experiments working jointly with our graduate students and postdocs, and co-author journal publications. We are looking for a smart, hard-working, responsible, organized, meticulous and affable candidate to begin in the job this summer (June or July preferred, but dates somewhat flexible). The title of the position is “Associate in research” and a B.S. or equivalent is required.

The Lab:

The determination and prediction of three-dimensional protein structures is essential for revealing molecular mechanism of disease processes, and also for structure-based drug design. Concomitantly, technological advances in protein design will revolutionize therapeutic treatment. With these advances, proteins and other molecules can be designed to act on today’s undruggable proteins or tomorrow’s drug resistant diseases. The Donald Laboratory specializes in experimental and computational studies of protein structure and design. We are funded by an established-investigator NIGMS MIRA award from NIH. Our studies of protein structures, dynamics, and design methodology will illuminate targets of biochemical and pharmacological significance, and the design of new therapeutics can alleviate mortality, morbidity, and human suffering.

Position requirements: A college degree in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field, plus at least one year of prior lab experience are required. Experience in expression and purification of proteins would be a plus. The job is full-time, but the schedule is flexible and could accommodate other commitments (e.g., caregiver responsibilities, clinical volunteering outside the lab). The position could be an excellent fit for someone seeking 1-3 years of research experience in preparation for medical school, graduate school or industry job applications.

Our team: The candidate will join a highly dynamic team of researchers that span several departments at Duke University, including Computer Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Engineering, and Mathematics, and others. The group emphasizes collaborative and multidisciplinary work bringing together expertise from various areas of science including computer science, mathematics, engineering and the life sciences with activities that encompass the College of Arts and Sciences, the Pratt

School of Engineering, and the Duke University School of Medicine. To perform our research we have excellent equipment and our lab is fully set up to express and purify proteins and protein complexes and to perform in vitro assays and structural studies. For example, we have our own fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and BLI (bio-layer interferometry) instruments.

How to apply: To inquire about the position candidates should submit a one-page cover letter, CV, brief statement of research experience and interests, and the name of two or three references.
