Johns Hopkins University Department of Physics and Astronomy Experimental Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics Postdoctoral Position: Axion Dark Matter Search with the HAYSTAC Experiment

The Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position in Experimental Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics. The Speller group, led by Assistant Professor Danielle H. Speller, focuses on low-temperature searches for physics beyond the standard model, with a concentration on searches for dark matter and neutrinoless double-beta decay. We have a postdoctoral research position available with the HAYSTAC axion dark matter experiment. HAYSTAC, the Haloscope at Yale Sensitive to Axion Cold Dark Matter, is a tunable microwave cavity experiment that employs state-of-the-art quantum sensing and microwave techniques to search for axions with masses in the range 10 to 100 μeV. Future plans include R&D toward the incorporation of novel microwave cavities and materials, new quantum devices, and the potential expansion to a second experimental site.

The successful applicant will have experience in data analysis, electronics, and low-temperature measurement techniques.

The applicant will be expected to work closely with graduate and undergraduate students. It is expected that the successful applicant will have a leading role in the development of local hardware, software, and analysis efforts, and will work with other members of the group on commissioning future test equipment in the campus laboratory.

Candidates should have a PhD in experimental nuclear or particle physics, or the equivalent, and preference will be given to candidates having experience with microwave & RF measurement techniques.

Applications should consist of a CV, list of publications, brief statement of research, and three letters of recommendation. Inquiries may be sent to Professor Danielle H. Speller at dspelle1@jh.edu.

Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. For information on benefits, please see https://hr.jhu.edu/benefits-worklife/. JHU is an affirmative action/ equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from women and members of underrepresented groups.
