Serves as working manager of
the Chemistry Instrument Support Group (CISG) in the Department of Chemistry in the
Summary of Duties
Manages CISG operation: manages accounts; monitors project workloads; trains technical staff with regard to appropriate methods and procedures; supervises staff, establishing expectations, setting goals and evaluating performance; prepares budgets and reports. Consults with faculty and other researchers on all aspects of experiment design, instrumentation and instrument acquisition for research and instruction; initiates designs and fabricates new instruments for chemical research projects, including construction of DC to microwave frequency range, interfacing of analog and digital devices to computer systems, and evaluation of electro-mechanical devices, sensors, and transducers. Responsible for the development of procedures and protocols for maintenance and calibration of scientific instruments such as optical spectrometers, surface spectrometers, mass spectrometers, lasers, laboratory computers, chromatographs, and general electronic test equipment. Provides expertise in
electrical safety and participates in department and university safety
education; maintains professional competence through literature, training courses and attendance of technical meetings such as the Pittsburgh Conference; performs other related duties as needed.
Minimum Education
Functional
knowledge of analog and digital electronics, laboratory computers,
electrochemistry, and laboratory instrumentation. Desired Ability
to perform programming in instrument control or graphical control computer
languages, such as LabView. Experience: Required Extensive
experience in a physical science research capacity is required. Experience in a progressively responsible
administrative capacity is preferred.
Experience with chemical instrumentation utilizing computer control and
data acquisition. Desired Ability to work cooperatively and provide instruction and mentoring. |
