Stanford University, Theater and Performance Studies

The Department of Theater & Performance Studies (TAPS) integrates theory, criticism, and performance. Our interdisciplinary department, which houses the Division of Dance, welcomes students from across the University who want to be involved in intensive, innovative, intellectual work about live performance. We train students to participate in multiple modes--from traditional theater and dance to improvised and devised performances. Students in the department learn analytic skills through research-based scholarship that focuses on doing as a means of understanding. In collaboration with our academic mission the department produces numerous events through its creative program and season of live shows. We offer workshops and productions that include canonical plays, commissioned dance works, experimental projects, and lecture/demonstrations by visiting artists. The Department functions as the campus hub for engaged scholarship in and about live dance, theater, and performance.
