Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral researcher position at the Kavli IPMU, the University of Tokyo.

The postdoctoral scholar will work on calibration and/or machine learning for water Cherenkov detectors (WCDs) of T2K, Super-Kamiokande (Super-K), and future Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) experiments together with Patrick de Perio at the Kavli IPMU.

Kavli IPMU participates in the large underground WCDs and long-baseline neutrino experiments: T2K, Super-K, and future Hyper-K. The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in a comprehensive calibration analysis and/or machine learning event reconstruction for WCDs. Additional hardware responsibilities will include one or more of the following:

  • Local gadolinium-loaded water purification and materials test stand,
  • Travel to Canada to develop novel water quality monitoring techniques, photogrammetry geometry surveying systems, detailed PMT characterizations, and
  • Construction of a new Water Cherenkov Test Experiment (WCTE) at CERN.

Both software and hardware developments will be applied to the WCTE beam data, as well as T2K and Super-K physics analyses.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics or related areas by the starting date of the position.
The appointment will start in late-autumn 2022 for 3 years, and can be extended upon a successful performance review and availability of funding. (The appointment can start immediately after the selection of the candidate.)

The deadline of the application is October 7, 2022. The position will be open until filled, however for full consideration please apply by the deadline.

Applicants should submit curriculum vitae (with email address and citizenship), a statement of research interests, and a list of publications. Applicants should also ensure that at least three letters of reference are submitted on their behalf.
They should be uploaded at Application Form.
