Postdoctoral Fellowship - Digital Historical Maps of Singapore and Southeast Asia 

Position Description  
Yale-NUS College, a collaboration between the National University of Singapore and Yale University, invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral research fellowship with a team developing a platform to host digitised, pre-1900 maps of Southeast Asia. 

Duties and Responsibilities 
The project is based at Yale-NUS College Singapore, and is in collaboration with the National Library Singapore, Bodleian Libraries University of Oxford, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library Yale University, and the Map Collections of Leiden University. The successful candidate would be expected to work with the collaborator libraries to identify suitable maps for inclusion into the online platform. They will also locate other sources on exploration and trade routes as well as nodal settlement patterns, which could augment the cartographic data. They will, in addition, be required to assist with the administration of the project and be able to work well in a team, including liaising with IT staff responsible for the design and development of the platform. 

Requirements
The candidate will have a good first degree and a PhD in history or historical geography, with a specialist interest in cartographic knowledges and/or history of Asia. The following are essential: 
• Familiarity with the role of maps and cartographic knowledge as historical source material; 
• Expertise in history of Asia, and preferably the history of Southeast Asia or maritime histories; 
• Experience of library and archival research. 

The following are advantageous: 
 • Experience in digital humanities 
 • Language proficiency in any of the following languages: Portuguese, Dutch, Mandarin or French.
