Position Description:    

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time, 10-month position in Art History at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence, as well as Curator and Director of the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery, at the Avery Point Campus. The anticipated start date is August 23, 2019.

We seek an engaging and excellent instructor of Art History with the ability to oversee and implement an exhibition program in the Von Schlippe Gallery.  The candidate will be expected to curate five exhibitions per year in the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery, develop gallery programming tied to the Avery Point academic programs and the community, and teach one class per semester in Art History.

The Alexey von Schlippe Gallery is a valued campus and community resource that presents a variety of art exhibitions linked to teaching and research at the Avery Point campus and connected to the University’s academic plan and cultural initiatives. The Gallery often shares exhibitions and programming with the University’s Archives and Special Collections, William Benton Museum of Art, Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, Contemporary Art Galleries, and Stamford Campus Gallery. The Gallery maintains a small permanent collection of work by the late former faculty member Alexey von Schlippe but is not otherwise a collecting institution.

The  successful  candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate level, to the development of innovative courses and to community outreach. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. Candidates will also be expected to participate in departmental and university service to support curricular and program development and advise undergraduate and graduate students in the department.

Avery Point contributes to the understanding – and solution – of problems relating to the intersection of oceans and people, both through the expertise of the faculty and the education of its students who will help ensure sustainable uses of marine resources and coastal regions and cities. The Avery Point campus places special emphasis on marine and maritime-oriented undergraduate curricula, as well as programs responsive to the needs of its significant corporate and industrial constituencies, and its unique regional economic and cultural characteristics. Assistant professors-in-residency carry a course load of 21 credits per academic year (or equivalent).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Curate five exhibitions per academic year (including one that extends through the summer) at the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery.
  • Undertake administrative responsibility for the Gallery, including but not limited to security, budget, facilities, and personnel issues, under the direction of the Avery Point Campus Director.
  • Develop campus and community programming in relation to the exhibitions.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with University cultural institutions, including the Benton Museum of Art, Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, and others.
  • Teach one Art History course per semester, according to the needs of the Avery Point campus; typically this 1-1 load will include an art history survey course as part of the General Education curriculum as well as another course that may be a survey, upper-level art history course, or interdisciplinary offering.
  • Serve on Avery Point, School of Fine Arts, and University committees, as assigned.
  • Maintain professional and research profile as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Ph.D. in Art History or a related field completed by start date; Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
  • Evidence or promise of a strong teaching record.
  • Curatorial experience in a gallery or museum.
  • A proven commitment to promoting diversity through teaching, research, and/or curatorial work. All candidates must also demonstrate promise in their research program. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant teaching experience beyond a teaching assistantship.
  • 2-3 years’ experience working in a gallery and/or museum as a director, curator, curatorial assistant, educator, registrar, conservator, or a in related role.
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in conceiving of exhibitions, budgeting, art handling and installation, promotion and advertising, and preparing didactic materials such as wall labels and catalogues.
  • An outstanding record of research and scholarship excellence.
  • Commitment to effective teaching, integrating technology into instruction, on-line instruction.
  • The ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 10-month, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2019. Position may be renewed annually. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Avery Point campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses or online as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
