Position Title: Staff Scientist
Position Type:Tenured/Tenure-track faculty
Position Location:Menlo Park, California 94025, United States [map]
Subject Area: High Energy Physics / Theoretical Particle Physics
Appl Deadline:2019/05/15 (posted 2019/03/17)
Position Description:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory invites applications for a position in Theoretical Particle Physics in the broad area of precision theory within the Fundamental Physics Directorate. This position will be at the level of an associate staff or staff scientist appointment, commensurate with the qualifications of the candidate. Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent), postdoctoral experience and a demonstrated potential for excellence in research. The search will cover the broad area of precision theoretical physics with the development of novel methods that will dramatically improve our quantitative understanding of quantum field theory. The research areas it encompasses include precision QCD and electroweak theory, Monte Carlo generators, scattering amplitudes, and nonperturbative or resummation methods.

The SLAC theory group pursues research in a broad range of theoretical subdisciplines, including collider physics, precision QCD, phenomenology and model building of physics beyond the Standard Model, dark matter physics, neutrino physics, and quantum field theory.  Together with the Stanford University Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, the Stanford theory community spans the full spectrum from formal theory to phenomenology to cosmology and provides a strong theoretical research environment.

The laboratory setting offers close interactions with the vibrant SLAC experimental program, which includes leading efforts in the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC, a neutrino program with both accelerator-based oscillation and neutrinoless double-beta decay  components, searches for dark sectors with low-energy collider beams, direct detection searches for dark matter with LUX/LZ and Super-CDMS, dark energy studies with DES, DESI and LSST, as well as cosmic microwave background experiments with BICEP and plans for Stage 4 CMB experiments.

Applications must include a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a statement of research interests and future plans, and at least 3 letters of recommendation. Applicants should submit their application materials online through Questions should be directed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Lance Dixon, by email ( For full consideration, applications should be completed by May 15, 2019. Start date for the position could be as early as October 1, 2019.

Stanford University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its employees. It welcomes nominations of and applications from women and members of minority groups, as well as from others who would bring additional dimensions to the university’s research and teaching missions.
