Arizona State University invites nominations and applications for an Assistant or Associate Research Professor to serve as Director of ASU’s Center for Digital Antiquity. We seek an entrepreneurial researcher and an intellectual leader in digital data management who is able to lead a small, dedicated staff in advancing the Center’s mission and strategic objectives. Digital Antiquity’s mission is to extend knowledge of the human past and improve the management of cultural heritage by permanently preserving digital archaeological data and supporting their discovery, access, and reuse. Digital Antiquity fulfills this charge through the development and operation of tDAR (the Digital Archaeological Record), an international digital repository holding the digital records of archaeological investigations and organizations, and related research.

The Director serves as the chief executive officer of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded Center of Digital Antiquity and is responsible for the acquisition of clients and the administration of the Center’s operations. Having grown steadily in our first decade, ASU seeks a resourceful and innovative leader able to build on a strong organizational and technical foundation to move tDAR to the next level. The Director holds an Assistant or Associate Research Professor (non-tenured, renewable) appointment in the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) and reports to the Digital Antiquity Board of Directors and to the Director of SHESC. This is a full-time fiscal year appointment with salary dependent on qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is July 2019. ASU provides excellent benefits.

DUTIES:
  • Provide national intellectual leadership in digital data preservation, management, and analysis;
  • Communicate the values of and needs for web-based digital data preservation and analysis to potential clients in the academic, private (CRM), and government sectors and demonstrate how these efforts create benefits that can bridge these sectors;
  • Communicate both to potential funders and to collaborators in other disciplines the value of integrated cultural heritage data for scholarship and to society;
  • Provide vision, leadership, and strategic guidance to the Center;
  • Promote the tDAR brand and grow Digital Antiquity by securing new clients and developing new markets for Digital Antiquity’s products and services;
  • Oversee business operations and manage a small staff in executing grant- and contract-funded projects;
  • Work effectively with clients;
  • Develop or participate in the development of proposals for grants that would advance tDAR’s services and Digital Antiquity’s mission;
  • Work productively with the Board of Directors, the SHESC Director and staff of SHESC.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD (or appropriate terminal degree) in Archaeology, Anthropology, Information Science, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience in managing staff, projects, and budgets
  • Experience working in team research
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding the development and sustainability of digital repositories and the preservation and reuse of digital data more generally
  • Experience with collections management, particularly digital curation and archiving
  • Background and experience in archaeology
    • Experience in cultural resource management, especially in the US;
  • Background and experience in computer or information science
    • Background and experience in science or library informatics efforts;
  • Experience in building and managing research teams
    •  Experience managing projects with strong technological components.
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire external funding
    • Experience writing successful grant applications
  • Experience working in an academic environment, including navigation of their business and financial management systems
