Position Description:    

The Hargrove lab at Duke University Department of Chemistry (https://chem.duke.edu/labs/hargrove) invites applications for a Research Scientist position in Synthetic Organic/Medicinal Chemistry. The incumbent will work with a dynamic team of undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs on the development of novel small molecule probes for targeting RNA. Specific project responsibilities include design, synthesis and evaluation of probes for targeting a variety of RNAs currently being explored in the Hargrove lab [See recent publications from our lab as examples - DOI: 10.1002/anie.201808823, DOI: 10.1039/C6MD00729E] as well as curation and maintenance of small molecule libraries. Significant experience in organic chemistry, particularly in the synthesis of nitrogen rich heterocycles and/or carbohydrate molecules, is required. Familiarity with the synthesis of nucleotides/ functionalized nucleotides is also desired. In addition to the synthesis of novel libraries, the incumbent will also provide synthetic support for other projects in the lab as needed and serve as an expert contact for other synthetic chemists in the lab.

The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with a focus on small molecule synthesis along with at least 1-2 years of postdoctoral or similar experience. Candidates with Bachelors or Masters degrees along with significant experience in organic synthesis will also be considered. Candidates must have effective oral and written communication skills and be able to provide leadership and research project guidance in the lab.
