Position Description:    

Associate in Research - Lab Manager The Onishi lab in the Department of Biology at Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) employs cutting-edge technologies in genetics, genomics, and cell biology to study the basic mechanisms of cell division (sites.duke.edu/onishilab). Our current system is the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which has both scientific and industrial values. We are seeking a highly motivated and responsible individual to fill a full-time Laboratory Technician position. Successful candidate will have excellent organization and communication skills as well as outstanding problem-solving and collaboration capabilities. Previous experience working with algae, yeast, or fungi is a plus but not required. Responsibilities will include assistance with research projects. Individuals aiming for graduate school in the future are especially encouraged to apply. Highly skilled candidates at advanced career stages will also be considered. Occupational Summary Coordinate administrative, technical and research activities in the lab. Carry out genetic, molecular biological, and cell biological experiments and help with experimental design, implementation, and data analysis. Co-supervise undergraduate students. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, but also be an excellent team member. Oversee all aspects of laboratory compliance with Duke and other policies as well as all research-adjacent activities (time/space management, undergraduate activities and outreach events in the lab). Work Performed Perform complex research laboratory techniques such as but not limited to: DNA/RNA/protein extraction and purification from bacteria, algae, and other organisms, maintain a large number of algal cultures using standard microbial techniques and using advanced robotics. Provide oversight and mentoring of undergraduate researchers in areas of project design, data analysis, and troubleshooting, as well as instruction in technical skills. Facilitation of graduate research through instruction and troubleshooting of techniques and assisting in project design. Manage the safety of the lab with special attention paid to training of personnel, management of safe physical spaces, management of hazardous materials, creation and maintenance of Standard Operation Procedures for techniques and individual chemicals. Serve as the primary point of contact for the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office. Liaise with biosafety and other oversight offices regarding approvals needed for research efforts. Coordinate equipment assessment, purchasing, maintenance, and oversight. Respond to equipment and space audit requests. Procure and maintain inventories of reagents, supplies, and samples as needed to support research activities of all lab personnel. Required Qualifications at this Level Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biological Engineering, Microbiology, Life Science, Agriculture, or related field. Experience: At least one year of research experience is preferred but a combination of education and research-related experience may be taken into account. Skills: Molecular biology techniques for extraction, isolation, cloning, and analysis of DNA/RNA is required. One or more of the following is a plus: Live-cell fluorescence, immunofluorescence, and/or electron microscopy; Techniques for purification of proteins and sample preparation for mass spectrometry; CRISPR-mediated genome editing; Genetic screens. Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills are a must. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Meticulous record-keeping skills. Basic coding experience is a plus but not indispensable (e.g. R, Python, MatLab).

The position begins in January 2020.
