Description: Associate in Research Organization: Duke University Position: Research Associate Location: International Population Health and Development Lab at Duke University in Durham, NC, USA Reports to: Professor Duncan Thomas, Duke University Start Date: November 1, 2019 Length of Commitment: 6 months

Experience: Expertise in developing machine learning applications that exploit recent innovations in neural networks for advanced computer vision; experience using high resolution satellite imagery; ability to construct labelled data using uncurated imagery files from complex and disparate settings. Advanced python, Matlab and Stata programming skills. Demonstrated capacity to lead research projects from inception through to preparation of scientific publications. Demonstrated ability to lead lab of undergraduate students, provide training, mentoring and supervision. Excellent communication and inter-personal skills. Undergraduate or more advanced degree in mathematics is required.

Responsibilities and qualifications: This is a part time job (10 hours per week) for a research scientist who will oversee undergraduates working in a research lab that is designed to support research in the population and health sciences. The successful candidate will develop state-of-the-art tools to extract high quality information from satellite imagery exploiting recent advances in neural networks. In addition to advanced programming skills that include python, Matlab and Stata, experience conducting scientific research from the inception of the project through to the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication is critical. Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to convey technical material in those manuscripts to a lay audience is key. The work will be led by the successful candidate with assistance from undergraduate researchers who the candidate will train, mentor and supervise to assure that the undergraduates learn and develop their skills so that they are poised to make important scientific contributions. It Excellent communication and inter-personal skills will be important. The work will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Duncan Thomas, the lab director, as well as other lab members. It is imperative that all the work be done on site in the lab located on the Duke University campus in Durham, NC.
