Postdoctoral Associate in Experimental Nuclear/Particle Physics at Stony Brook University

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of experimental nuclear/particle physics to be based in the Physics and Astronomy Department at Stony Brook University.

Required Qualifications: PhD degree in High Energy Physics or foreign equivalent in hand by February 29, 2020. Extensive experience in the analysis of data from high energy particle collisions.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with tracking and/or b/tau-tagging related algorithms and performance tools. Good knowledge of either detector design, construction or commissioning, especially in the silicon tracker detector domain and their implications on physics performance.

Brief Description of Duties: The primary purpose of this position would be that of performing research, in collaboration with Dr. Giacinto Piacquadio on a variety of topics in experimental particle physics, with a particular emphasis on physics measurement and searches with Higgs boson decaying to b-quarks quark, to be performed within the ATLAS collaboration. The holder of the position would also be participating in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students on research projects connected with the PI’s group. Specific job duties include:

Perform research in experimental high energy physics in collaboration with the PI and within the ATLAS Collaboration. In particular, the incumbent will be expected to work on physics analyses in ATLAS with the aim of searching for new physics or performing Standard Model measurements, with emphasis on physics channels with Higgs boson or hypothetical new particles decaying to b-quark jets. She/he is also expected to work together with the PI on developing new techniques for the identification of b- and c-quark jets.

Work on setting up a test station for modules and stave for the ITK strip detector tracker upgrade for the HL-LHC. Set up a readout chain and prepare the software to run and later automatize the tests needed for Q&A. Test stations are being setup at CERN and at BNL, and the work will happen in collaboration with the BNL ATLAS group. This task might later include the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students helping with the assembly and test of modules and staves.

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.

Present research results either in workshop and conferences or by preparing publications with such results.

Other duties as assigned.

Travel Required – The incumbent will travel to attend ATLAS meetings, workshop and conferences; in addition he/she might reside for periods of one to many months at CERN in order to collaborate with colleagues from the ATLAS experiment and potentially take on coordination roles.

This position is a term position supported by research funds and the continued support will be dependent on the renewal of those funds.
