Position may be located in New York, NY (at 570 Lexington Ave) or Ithaca, NY (location negotiable), within the ILR School, with regular travel to locations in Ithaca, NYC and Buffalo.

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for an Executive Director for Outreach in the Extension/Outreach Division.

The Executive Director for Outreach reports to the Associate Dean for Outreach. The Executive Director is responsible for oversight of extension programing and operations across outreach thematic units. The Executive Director is responsible for monitoring  outreach programs and services closely to ensure alignment with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting and research activities of the centers, institutes and programs. This position also supervises outreach administrative support resources.

The position’s primary focus will be:

·         Partner with Associate Dean of Outreach in executing on vision and overall strategy.

·         In collaboration with ILR outreach unit leaders, set the framework for annual organizational, unit and individual level goal-setting for outreach activities.

·         Oversee and manage Outreach programmatic activities to include professional programs, custom programs, trainings, technical assistance, and other outreach unit activities.

·         Partner with ILR Core Team members (Associate and Assistant Deans) to promote visibility for the School's outreach activities, to strengthen public relations, and ensure compliance with University policies and applicable federal, state and local laws.

·         Promote and foster integration across Outreach centers, institutes, and programs and between Outreach and other parts of the ILR School.

·         Work with Outreach centers, institutes and programs to develop strategic planning processes and tools.

·         Collaborate with Outreach leads to develop consistent performance expectations across the different Outreach centers, institutes, and programs.

·         As designated by Associate Dean, represent ILR Outreach at university committee, state legislative and federal agency functions.

·         Facilitate identification of and response by appropriate ILR outreach subject matter experts to external inquiries about topics and issues related to the world of work.

·         Stay informed about a broad range of best practice and/or advances in knowledge in a field related to the world of work.

Senior Extension Associate is a non-tenure track, academic term position with up to a five-year initial appointment.  The position may be reappointed on the basis of recommendations by the Associate Dean of Outreach and the Dean, as well as available funding and work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in field related to workplace issues (industrial and labor relations, employment or labor law, human resources/management/business, organizational behavior/change, economics, workforce development, vocational rehabilitation, occupational medicine/workplace safety and health, education, diversity/inclusion, etc.).
  • A minimum of six years of leadership experience in an academic or non-profit environment.
  • Experience with financial planning, budgeting, supervision, and contract and/or grant management.
  • Relevant professional leadership and network development at the state, regional, national, and/or international areas in relevant professional, trade, policy, or public networks.
  • Experience teaching workplace related courses in college-level environment, conducting training to relevant target audience, and/or conducting research in a thematic content area.
  • Demonstrated writing ability and scholarly record in a thematic content area (articles in peer-reviewed journals, articles in trade publications, research and project reports, informational brochures, policy briefs, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaborative environments and to contribute to the innovation and outcome success of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    ·        Think strategically
    ·        Communicate clearly
    ·        Understand different organizational structures and systems
    ·        Work with large budgets
    ·        Manage a staff of academics with significant administrative responsibilities
    ·        Function in a changing organizational environment
    ·        Maintain focus on strategy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in an academic field related to the workplace. 
  • Demonstrated experience (7-10 years), managing a portfolio of outreach-related projects containing training, research, and/or knowledge dissemination activities.
  • Program evaluation expertise and experience.
  • Extensive experience in the writing and management of sponsored work activities.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and managing online learning activities.

This is a full-time, non-tenure track academic benefits eligible term opportunity based at the ILR Ithaca Campus or the ILR NYC Extension office located at 570 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10022.
