Postdoctoral Associate Position: Understanding neural activity with high speed fluorescence imaging tools.

A postdoctoral position in developing neurotechnologies is available in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University (Durham, NC, USA) in the group of Yiyang Gong. The lab is interested in expanding the set of tools to optically record and control neural activity using novel protein tools and microscopy tools. Recent publications of the lab are geared toward optical voltage imaging (Gong et. al. Science, 2015) of many neurons simultaneously in live animals. In order to achieve this large-scale recording at high-spatiotemporal resolutions, the lab is expanding the optogenetics toolbox in the fields of protein sensors, optics, and data processing: (1) The lab is engineering additional protein voltage sensors geared toward parallel recordings; (2) The lab is creating innovative one-photon and two-photon microscopy technologies; (3) The lab is producing fast computational algorithms to process recorded neural data. The interdisciplinary projects in the lab will include opportunities for collaboration with investigators in Engineering, Biology, and Neurobiology at Duke. Together, the diverse opportunities for research will prepare candidates to establish an independent research program in modern neuroscience, investigating the complete pathway from molecular biology to animal behavior.

Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. or is nearing completion of a Ph.D. in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biophysics, neuroscience, neurobiology, optics, molecular or cell biology, or related fields with a strong experimental background, academic history, and publication record. The lab is interested in candidates with experience in any of the following:

•Animal behavior

•Computational neuroscience

•Molecular biology

•Optical Microscopy

The lab has open positions starting in January 2020 for durations of up to two years. Qualified candidates should submit a CV, the names and contact information of three (3) references, and cover letter with description of research interests directly to Yiyang Gong at neuroscience.toolbox@gmail.com.
