Position Overview: The Department of Visual and Performing Arts seeks to hire a full-time, tenure-track faculty member who will serve as Assistant Director of Bands and a scholar-practitioner of music technology and engineering in relation to contemporary composing, performing, and listening practices. The ideal candidate will have experience directing student bands of a variety of sizes and skill levels, facility with current music software and recording/production tools, and experience teaching practice-based studio courses in music theory, composition, and/or engineering/production. Applicants who bring interdisciplinary and/or cross-cultural approaches to their research, teaching, and creative practice will be at a distinct advantage.

Responsibilities: Teach introductory- and intermediate-level courses in music technology, composition, theory, and related fields; develop and teach advanced undergraduate courses in areas of interest and specialization; contribute to the department’s interdisciplinary curriculum shared by Music, Graphic Design, Theatre, and Visual Arts; maintain a productive agenda of scholarly and creative work and professional involvement in music technology and related fields, and collaborate on a shared departmental vision for future development of graduate-level programs such as arts management and recording production/engineering. As Assistant Director of Bands, responsibilities will average 10 hours per week, including approximately 2 hours per week of rehearsal and 8 hours per week for prep/planning and performances, with the primary focus being supporting our robust athletic band program. Night and weekend commitments are expected.

Qualifications: Terminal degree in music technology, music composition, performance, musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, conducting, or related field, completed by the time of appointment; experience working with and leadership of student bands; recognized scholarly publications, presentations, and/or creative projects; successful undergraduate teaching experience in music technology and/or theory; and interest in contributing to curriculum development for music studies in a liberal arts program.
