|The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), an affiliate of the Global Institute of Sustainability and a joint venture between Arizona State University and the University of Arkansas, is looking for a Research Manager to work with other researchers and corporate, NGO, government, and academic stakeholders to develop knowledge products concerning the sustainability of consumer products. The worldâ€™s largest retailers and manufacturers are using these products to drive product and supply chain innovation around sustainability.
-Serve as sustainability subject matter expert for chemical issues in TSC;
-Manage research process to identify and draft environmental and social impact criteria for products involving chemicals and chemical processing;
-Work with Working Group Directors to drive membership consensus around the criteria and their measurement and reporting requirements;
-Supervise graduate students and external research contracts to support research needs;
-Incorporate and/or harmonize work with existing standards and regulations;
-Organize and oversee external expert and public review of deliverables and integration of recommendations as necessary;
-Harmonize/integrate efforts with other research teams in TSC;
-Liaise with domestic and international governmental and non-governmental entities, industry groups and academic institutions as necessary;
-Develop and manage project plans and timelines for deliverables;
-Regularly communicate project status and progress against timelines to relevant stakeholders;
-Direct internal review and auditing processes against established TSC procedures;
-Travel (15-20% time) for face to face meetings;
-Other duties as assigned.
DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM
Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, toxicology, epidemiology, environmental science, or a related field and three (3) years of industry experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. A successful candidate will have expertise in one or more areas related to chemical applications in consumer products.
Experience in: environmental and/or corporate sustainability; life cycle assessment; managing multi-stakeholder projects.
Demonstrated knowledge of: establishing and maintaining working relationships with key industry partners; sustainability and corporate social responsibility trends, laws, regulations, research and best practices; chemical manufacturing; impacts of chemicals on human health.
Ability to frame difficult issues, present options, facilitate discussions, approach complex problems creatively and drive to action or resolution.
Ability to perform research in a deadline-driven business environment, and be committed to TSCâ€™s mission.
Solid project and program management skills, including organizing, prioritizing and managing resources.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

The Global Institute of Sustainability conducts research, education, and problem-solving related to sustainability, with a special focus on urban environments. The Institute initiates and nurtures work on issues of sustainability across many departments on the four campuses of ASU, and collaborates with other academic institutions, governments, businesses and industries, and community groups locally, nationally, and globally.
The Sustainability Consortium is a non-profit organization created through a collaboration between leading academic institutions, retailers, consumer goods companies and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Established in 2008, the goal of the organization is to bring together diverse global participants to collaboratively build a scientific foundation promoting innovation to improve consumer product sustainability through all stages of a productâ€™s life cycle. In short, TSC has the aspiration of becoming the leading global entity in scientific product measurement, enabling companies and consumers to make informed decisions about product sustainability.
Within the consortium today there are over 60 companies and an additional half dozen non-governmental organizations. Funded largely through membership fees, the organization currently has a budget of about $8 million with 30 full time employees, all of which are expected to grow in the coming years, and an additional 30-50 consultants and contractors.
