Labor Leading on Climate Research and Policy Development Associate - Worker Institute

Position is located in New York, NY, within the ILR School located at 570 Lexington Ave, working remotely until location reopens.

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for an Extension Associate - Research and Policy Development Associate within the Worker Institute of the Extension/Outreach Division of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The Extension Associate is responsible for extension programming and administration within one or more thematic areas.  The Extension Associate is responsible for developing and delivering programs and services that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and for monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting and research activities of the program.  The Extension Associate will participate with other academic staff in setting thematic area goals and will annually set individual programmatic and budgetary goals. This position reports to the Labor Leading on Climate Director.

Extension Associate is a non-tenure track, academic term position with a one-year appointment. The position may be reappointed on the basis of available funding and work with recommendations by the appropriate Executive Director, Academic Director and Associate Dean.

Project Related Emphasis:

This position is responsible for research and policy development at the nexus of labor, equity, climate change and the clean energy economy. This work requires high-quality, expert industry and workforce research on the type, quantity and quality of jobs in new clean energy sectors and the economic, employment and labor implications of a transition to a low-carbon economy, and a strong understanding of unions needs and interests in this transition.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in public policy, environmental studies, labor studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum three to five years of experience in community or labor, or public policy research.
  • Experience and desire to work in action-oriented research setting.
  • Strong skills in written communication, report writing, and quantitative analysis.
  • Comfort and flexibility with working on several research projects simultaneously and supervising research assistants.
  • Familiarity with labor unions, worker organizations, and climate change.
  • Social Justice: a strong commitment to racial, economic, social and climate justice.
  • Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, and strong interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience contributing to financial integrity of programs through seeking/securing external funding sources - contracts, grants, etc.


This is a full-time non-tenure track academic benefits eligible one year term opportunity based at the ILR NYC Extension office located at 570 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10022, working remotely until location reopens.
