The Chang Lab (http://www.pamchanglab.com) conducts research at the interface of chemical biology, microbiology, and immunology. Located in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Cornell University in beautiful Ithaca, NY, our research is focused on understanding chemical communication between the gut microbiome and the host immune system. Using both chemical and biological approaches, we develop novel chemical tools to understand 1) the metabolism of the gut microbiome and 2) important pathways within the host immune system by controlling the activities of specific immune cell types. We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral associate with an outstanding record of independent research in chemical biology to carry out interdisciplinary research projects at the interface of chemical biology, microbiology, and immunology. Projects may include organic synthesis of novel chemical probes, application of these probes to biological systems, and biological study of host-microbe interactions. As per Cornell’s standard policy, this is a one-year appointment, subject to renewal based on performance and available funding. Required qualifications: Individual must either have a Ph.D. or be completing a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Biology with strong knowledge base and extensive experience in organic synthesis, chemical biology, or a related field. Responsibilities: Design and carry out multistep organic syntheses of chemical probes, apply these probes in biological systems, and pursue hypothesis-driven studies of host-microbe interactions. Techniques may include but are not limited to: organic synthesis, i.e., setting up reactions, purifying compounds, NMR/MS characterization; biochemical and (bacterial and mammalian) cell-based assays; and in vivo studies in mice.
