The Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS) pursues new approaches to Data Science research, education, operations, and partnerships. These approaches cross college boundaries to connect elements of Data Science from engineering, technology, science and the humanities, and inform wider social challenges. TAMIDS is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist who will develop research programs for innovative education and training in Data Science, and collaborate and coordinate faculty and students to promote the growth of Data Science skills and knowledge. The successful candidate will have a PhD Degree in a field related to Data Science and experience delivering Data Science education in a University Environment. 

Required Education and Experience: 
  • PhD in a field related to Data Science
  • Relevant professional experience in delivering Data Science education in a university or related environment 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others 
Preferred Education and Experience: 
  • PhD in field related to Data Science 
  • 3 years’ experience in research on education and training in Data Science in a university or similar environment, including implementation through design and delivery 
  • Development of research funding proposals including educational components 
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration on research or education 
  • Engagement and mentorship of students in educational and training programmatic activities 
  • Experience in pedagogical aspects of education design and delivery 
  • Experience developing or implementing metrics for evaluating education program performance
  • Experience of test design, sampling, hypothesis testing, evaluation of evidence, A/B testing 
  • Experience using R or Python to develop analytical solutions 
  • Experience querying data from relational databases using SQL 
  • Experience with data wrangling, data cleaning and prep 
  • Experience with Data Science systems, tools and architecture, e.g. Cloud, Hadoop, Hive, Spark
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Data visualization skills and ability to present technical solutions to non-technical audience 
Responsibilities: 
  • Research on Education and Training in Data Science
    • Develops research programs for innovative education in Data Science, encompassing for-credit programs, training courses for students and faculty, and professional and continuing education. 
    • Develops and/or delivers innovative courses and training modules in Data Science during implementation or in support of research programs in Data Science education, including development of innovative curriculum, assessment methods, class practices, and delivery, observation, and evaluation of these in class setting. 
    • Develops proposals for external research funding concerning Data Science education and training (such as NSF IGE, REU, RET, Data Science Corps) or within larger efforts (such as NSF TRIPODS, ERC, AI Institutes) 
  • Education Coordination and Development
    • Coordinates educational activities in support of research programs or as potential preliminary work toward future research programs. 
    • Coordinates with TAMU organizations concerning development of joint education programs in Data Science. 
    • Collaborates with faculty and researchers to develop and incorporate Data Science content in courses. 
    • Acts as TAMIDS point of contact with students and student organizations for TAMIDS education activities. 
    • Conducts outreach efforts in Data Science to local K-12 schools. 
    • Organize student competitions and hackathons. 
  • Other:
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
