Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Wheelock College of Education and Human Development at Boston University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of TESOL, who studies adult ESL from a critical applied linguistics perspective. We are, in particular, seeking a scholar with visibility in the field of TESOL and an established and coherent research program that connects teaching and learning of English with issues of social justice and equity. The Department of Language and Literacy Education, in which this position will be housed, is a community of scholars and educators who embrace multilingualism and multiliteracies and who share an explicit commitment to combatting the deficit framing of racially and linguistically minoritized people. To that end, we are seeking a colleague who brings a strong critical perspective to both their applied linguistics research and their teaching of TESOL courses and who is passionate to collaborate with scholars in the College who work in related areas such as policy, literacy, and antiracism.

This position begins on July 1, 2022. Applicants from diverse backgrounds, especially with bilingual/multilingual proficiency, are strongly encouraged to apply. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:

·      Earned doctorate in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Educational Linguistics, or a related field

·      Expertise in critical applied linguistics, raciolinguistics, and/or culturally sustaining pedagogy in the context of adult ESL (either within the U.S. or international contexts)

·      An active and coherent program of research, with a record of peer-reviewed journal publications

·      Strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

·      A secondary interest/expertise in another area such as immigration policy, immigrant rights, adult literacy development, anti-racism, and critical race theory

·      International teaching experience

·      At least three years of experience being a tenure-track faculty at a university

·      Strong bilingual or multilingual proficiency

The successful candidate will pursue a substantial and relevant program of research, build relationships with local immigrant-serving community-based organizations, explore collaborative possibilities with other faculty in the College and at Boston University, and seek external funding consistent with their research program. This faculty member will teach existing teacher education courses such as Second Language Acquisition and Teaching Methods in TESOL as well as develop new elective courses such as Critical Applied Linguistics and Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Pedagogy. This faculty member will also supervise Ph.D. students. In addition, the faculty will engage, along with the current program director, in further development of the TESOL Non-Licensure Program.

Inquiries may be directed to the Chair of the Search Committee: Dr. Yasuko Kanno, yakanno@bu.edu.

Review of application will begin on October 10, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

Applicants should submit the following documents electronically to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/19424:

  • Brief cover letter explaining suitability for position
