Lecturer

Position Function

The Department of MBG at Cornell University is responsible for teaching a 4-credit course (BIOMG3300, Principles of Biochemistry, Individualized Instruction). This course is offered
both Spring and Fall semesters and is taken by approximately 400 students per academic year and satisfies a core requirement of all Cornell students majoring
in Biological Sciences. The topics presently taught include protein structure and function, enzymes, basic metabolic pathways, DNA, RNA, protein synthesis,
and an introduction to recombinant DNA techniques.  This course is taught in an auto-tutorial format without formal lectures.  The
Lecturer will be fully responsible for instruction in this course including training of ~50 undergraduate teaching assistants (TAs) per semester, one-on-one
instruction of students, and maintenance of all course materials. The Lecturer will also be responsible for teaching a 1-credit course in Computer Graphics
and Molecular Biology (BIOMG 3340), which involves the visualization of complex biomolecules using computer graphics techniques and group presentations on
current topics in molecular biology and is taken by approximately 30-40 students per semester. This 9-month position that will become available for the
fall semester 2022 although the precise start date is flexible.  We would strongly prefer a lecturer being involved in summer teaching, and if time permits, collaborative teaching during
the academic year with other faculty in MBG.

Anticipated Division of Time

Instruction and Evaluation (70%)

  • Lead two weekly TA training meetings (one for undergraduate TAs in 3300, and one for graduate TAs in 3340).
  • Teach one section of 3340 per semester.
  •  One-on-one teaching in 3300 Study Center.
  •  Updating of weekly quizzes, preparation and grading of 3 exams per semester, and determination of final grades (3300).
Mentoring (10%)  

  • Supervise and mentor TAs.
  •      Serve as academic advisor to undergraduate students in the biology major.
  • Provide student recommendations (for many of the undergraduate TAs who apply to professional schools after graduation as well as summer internship programs).

Course Development (10%)  

  • Updating course study guides and other instructional materials for both 3300 and 3340.
  •      Participate in faculty committees that help coordinate teaching.
Supervision (5%)  

  • Supervise one half-time 9.5-month administrative assistant.

Me Personal and Professional Development (5%)

  • Stay current in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology.
  •      Participate in department and university committee work.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities such as workshops on teaching and learning.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with faculty and peers.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or similar field.
  •      At least 3 years preferred of experience post PhD in teaching at college level.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
