Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Department of Physics at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position to commence in summer/fall 2022. Applicants with spectroscopic and IFU experience are especially encouraged to apply, but we welcome all applicants with an interest in exploring the astrophysics of the circumgalactic/intergalactic/interstellar gas.

The successful applicant will work in the group of Profs. Chris Howk and Nicolas Lehner and will lead projects with data obtained from the future James Webb Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Large Binocular Telescope, and the Keck Telescopes. The extragalactic group at Notre Dame has strong collaborations with theorists and observers from multiple institutions with a goal of addressing fundamental questions about the nature of gaseous matter in and around galaxies.

Applicants demonstrating strong writing skills, analytical skills, research creativity, and a history of successful project completion will be viewed favorably. Previous experience in analysis of spectroscopic data and code development is a plus, but not necessary.

The successful applicant must have completed the Ph.D. requirements before assuming the position. A complete application includes a cover letter expressing the candidate’s background and interest in the position, curriculum vitae with publications, a research statement, and three letters of reference. The research statement should address past/current research and future interests. The statement should be approximately two pages. Applications received by December 15, 2021, will receive full consideration. Please contact Profs. Chris Howk or Nicolas Lehner with questions about the position.

The initial appointment will be for one year based on University policy, with the expectation that the appointment will last at least three years, contingent on annual performance reviews. Base salary will be commensurate with experience.

The University of Notre Dame is committed to excellence through diversity. The University of Notre Dame is located in South Bend, Indiana and provides a family-friendly environment and affordable cost of living and is only 2 hours from the vibrant city of Chicago.

The successful applicant will receive health care and other benefits (http://hr.nd.edu/benefits/). Postdoctoral scholars at Notre Dame More information about being a postdoctoral scholar at Notre Dame can be found at http://postdocs.nd.edu.
