Who we are:

The Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS) and its newly established VIVID Lab for Visceral Inter­sensory Visualization & Information Design explores how both experts and non-experts can interact with the analyses of Data Science, through systems and technologies to produce both visible and tangible representations. VIVID staff will be part of a multidisciplinary team in Science and Engineering, working in theoretical, algorithmic, and applied aspects of VIVID.

What we want:

TAMIDS is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will develop methods and tools to support the VIVID lab pilot studies, and coordinate and lead students that are supported through the lab. This position will not be tied exclusively to a single project or Lab member, rather they will act as an agent for collaboration and cross-fertilization across the lab, and beyond. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or Engineering, with a solid background in Scientific Visualization, Machine Learning, 3D Fabrication, Immersive Technology (AR/VR) or related area, and will possess strong design, computational and data visualization skills. Additionally, the preferred candidate would have an established track record of publication and collaboration, and be comfortable managing and analyzing large data sets. Above all, the preferred candidate would have a passion for discovering innovative new frameworks to transform data into impactful stories that have the potential to instigate change. Required Education and Experience:

Appropriate PhD

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong design, computational and data visualization skills. Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams Strong programming skills Good communication skills Demonstrated expertise in machine learning. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Education and Experience:

PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Scientific Visualization, Immersive Technology, or similar discipline related to Data Visualization, Information Design, or 3D Fabrication. Strong academic background in Computer Science and Scientific Visualization and Engineering applied areas. Experience managing and analyzing large data sets. Experience in publication and collaboration.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced knowledge of data visualization and information design methods and foundations Experience with scientific visualization to solve science and engineering problems Strong programming skills including experience with Python / D3 / JavaScript / Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds. Ability and desire to discover innovative new frameworks to transform data into impactful stories that have the potential to instigate change.

Responsibilities:

Research: Performs original high-quality research within the multidisciplinary collaborative groups in the VIVD Lab. Develops methods and tools to sup­port the VIVID lab pilot studies. Engages in research and supports the activities of the lab. Produces publications, conference papers and other research outputs, according to agreed objectives, and attends and presents research findings at appropriate conferences and meetings. Attends internal and external seminars, conferences and workshops aimed at sharing research outcomes, building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside group, and mutual education. Lab Community Engagements

Delivers research workshops on VIVID topics and software packages and provides consultation on their usage to other researchers. Assists with the organization of community building activities, and assists with the day-to-day operations of the lab. Contributes to talks on individual or group research to the Lab Workshops, contributes to the VIVID social media. Assists with the mentoring of research students in the group and/or interdisciplinary student team Data Science and Visualization projects.

Performs other duties as assigned.
