Department of Global Development Research Associate

Position Function 

This position will provide research and teaching support in economic development, planning, local government finance and infrastructure, and public health, with a focus on advanced modeling techniques. Research responsibilities (75% FTE): Contribute to the design and implementation of research projects on data collection and analysis of economic, demographic, health, finance and planning data for all local governments in the US. Candidate will help with national surveys of local government planning practices and case study development through supervision of students. Analysis will include advanced statistical skills of data analysis, including software packages using Python to collect, visualize, and analyze data. They will be responsible for data management, data visualization, advanced statistical analysis, web scraping, and machine learning, both in research and in teaching. Responsible for writing journal articles and presenting at academic conferences and helping write grant proposals. 

Teaching and Student Supervision Responsibilities (25%): Expected to teach three credits on urban data science. Students will learn how to collect, visualize, and analyze data. Course topics include data management, data visualization, web scraping, and machine learning for use in research across subject domains and for spatial analysis. Special attention will be given to applications to research and policy. Supervise students in class projects and in ongoing engaged research activities. 

Anticipated Division of Time

40% data collection and analysis 
35% writing journal articles and proposals 
25% teaching and student supervision 

Requirements

 A PhD in Regional Science is required to perform the duties of the position. Required: Knowledge of data collection and management, statistics, spatial analysis, machine learning, and academic proposal and journal article writing. Knowledge of the literature in economic development, planning and public health. Three years job-related experience required – could be in combination with achieving a PhD. 

Supervision Exercised 

Candidate will supervise graduate and undergraduate students. Mildred Warner will supervise the position.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
