The College of Health (COH) at Lehigh University invites applications for a tenure track faculty member with a specialization in artificial intelligence (e.g., natural language processing, machine learning) and data science applied to health data such as electronic medical records or -omics data. Applications from qualified individuals for hire at the rank of Associate or Full Professor will be considered, including the possibility of tenure on hire for qualified candidates. Candidates for hire at the rank of full professor will be considered for the position of founding chair of a new Department of Biostats/Epi. Candidates must possess an earned doctorate by the date of employment in one of the following or related fields: data science, statistics, biostatistics, engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics. The successful candidate will advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence and machine learning by developing new analytic methods in pursuit of data-driven solutions to problems for individuals and communities, particularly those in marginalized populations. S/he/they will contribute to COH partnerships with industry, healthcare providers, and insurers, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in the Data Science degree program in the Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Decision and Technology Analytics Department in the College of Business. The successful candidate will teach introductory courses in biostatistics and data science, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her/their area of expertise, mentor and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, assist with data science curriculum design, and contribute to the growth of the College of Health.

At the core of the COH is a commitment to foster positive change in the communities where we live and work by promoting health equity. The mission of the COH, the newest of five colleges at Lehigh University, is to understand, preserve, and improve the health and well-being of domestic and global populations and communities with data-driven and community-focused research and education in three primary areas: population health, community health, and health innovation and technology. Our strategic plan identifies the core areas of research distinction in which the COH will continue to grow faculty expertise. We intend to build a team of scholars with expertise in both technology/data science and community-based participatory research in order to collaborate with communities of users to develop and apply health technologies that will reduce health disparities. We are committed to developing a particular, though not exclusive, focus on marginalized communities in the Lehigh Valley, as well as Indigenous communities locally, nationally, and globally. The COH offers undergraduate majors in Population Health and Community and Global Health, several minor fields of study, and graduate degrees including a Master in Public Health and an MS and PhD in Population Health. As our faculty grows, the COH will add an undergraduate major and minor in Biostatistics or Health Data Analytics, a suite of graduate degrees in Digital Health (certificate, MS, PhD), as well as a Community Health track within our existing doctorate. The distinctive experiences of undergraduates and graduate students in the COH include an innovative curriculum, robust experiential learning opportunities, and integrated career and professional development. The COH is host to three research institutes: the Institute for Indigenous Studies, the Institute for Health Policy and Politics, and the Children’s Environmental Precision Health Institute. COH faculty also may participate in the three research institutes based in Lehigh’s College of Engineering: the Institute for Functional Materials and Devices, the Institute for Data, Intelligent Systems, and Computation, and the Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure and Energy. The COH is located in the Health, Science, and Technology (HST) Building, Lehigh University’s newest, state-of-the-art research facility, which opened in January 2022. The innovative, flexible, and sustainably designed facility will advance Lehigh University’s research innovation in STEM. The innovative design of the building encourages interdisciplinary collaboration; develops functional neighborhoods that create a model of intensity and productivity; and engages the campus community by bringing the public into the building.
