Tenured or tenure-track position at the University of Oregon in Environmental Materials Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oregon (UO) announces a search in the area of Environmental Materials Chemistry, broadly defined (spanning both computation and experimental work, energy, etc.). Appointments may be made at any rank (assistant, associate, or full professor) and continue UO’s long-term commitment to grow the basic and applied sciences. The hire will join an innovative and highly collaborative team in the Material Science Institute (https://materialscience.uoregon.edu/), the Oregon Center for Electrochemistry (https://electrochemistry.uoregon.edu/), and as part of the Environment Initiative (https://environment.uoregon.edu/). The Environment Initiative focuses the intellectual energy and work of faculty, students, and community partners on working towards a just and livable future through transdisciplinary research, teaching, and experiential learning.  This position is part of an eleven-cluster hire that reflects the UO’s commitment to investing in transdisciplinary research and teaching in climate solutions and environmental justice.

Exceptional candidates with backgrounds across chemistry, physics, engineering, and/or materials science are encouraged to apply. The minimum requirement is a PhD in science or engineering, and the position will remain open until filled. Salaries and start-up packages will be highly competitive. The successful candidate will work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. They will build and/or maintain a high-profile, internationally prominent, an externally funded research group, work to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences, while innovating in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.

This position builds upon the established excellence of Materials Science and Electrochemistry at UO. Recent investments include over $30 million in equipment for the Center for Advanced Materials Characterization in Oregon, which is managed by professional staff and housed in two new buildings along with state-of-the art laboratory space (https://camcor.uoregon.edu/). Oregon is home to the new Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, a $1B initiative to fast-track scientific discovery and innovation (http://accelerate.uoregon.edu/). Faculty and student experiences are further enhanced by unique graduate-education programs, industry partnerships and innovation activities.

Applications can be submitted to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22481. Applicants at the senior level (Associate or Full Professor) should include a curriculum vitae as well as a cover letter briefly articulating interest in the position as well as any relevant information regarding efforts in research, education, and innovation the candidate would like to share with the hiring committee. The candidate should also include a separate statement illustrating how they promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work (typically approx. one page). Applicants at the Junior level (Assistant Professor) should include, in addition to the cover letter and vitae, a statement of research plans and objectives (typically approx. five pages), teaching philosophy or interests (typically approx. one page), and a statement illustrating how the candidate promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work (typically approx. one page). Junior candidates should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be uploaded directly by the recommenders.

The Department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, mentorship, and/or service, to the diversity of the academic community.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2022 and continue on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. Inquiries/nominations can be sent to swb@uoregon.edu
