"Bringing Computation to the Climate Challenge" (BC3) aims to provide decision makers with accurate, actionable, and rapidly generated scientific information to drive effective climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. We envision a novel platform that leapfrogs existing climate decision support tools. By leveraging new computing languages and advances in computational and data sciences, we aim to improve the efficiency and accuracy of climate models, quantify their uncertainties, and address the trade-off between performance and computation time with attention to industry and government stakeholder needs. We are looking for postdoctoral scholars who want to contribute to one or multiple of the following project aims: (1) build and prototype sea ice and carbon cycle components of the climate model that will be used to make climate projections, (2) develop and test machine learning- and/or physics-derived emulator models to rapidly predict a subset of variables for targeted, stakeholder-driven applications relevant to climate and air quality, and (3) work with stakeholders to tailor the utility of our models to urgent, real world use cases. REQUIRED: a PhD, in atmospheric or oceanic sciences, climate sciences, atmospheric chemistry, applied mathematics, engineering, statistics, or related interdisciplinary fields. Experience in computational modeling, working with high-performance parallel computing, demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills, and working in interdisciplinary teams is highly desired.
