Position Description

The Department of Bioengineering at Rice University in Houston, TX is currently soliciting external senior applicants for a tenured, full professor in bioengineering, who will serve as the new department chair starting in July 2023, and be nominated for the John W. Cox Professorship in bioengineering.  The department is currently ranked among the top 10 bioengineering programs in the country by US News & World Report and aspires to continue to enhance its impact and recognition.  All faculty laboratories and teaching facilities for the department are located at the BioScience Research Collaborative, a 477,000 sq ft. building at the intersection of the Rice University campus and the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world.

The department has 20 tenured and tenure-track faculty with significant growth in faculty size planned over the next several years.  The successful candidate will be senior faculty with a demonstrated capability to (i) provide outstanding leadership to the department, (ii) lead a highly impactful research program, (iii) enrich and engage in a collegial departmental environment, (iv) promote diversity, equity and inclusion. The candidate must have an internationally recognized track record of cutting-edge research, and a strong record of leadership and management skills. While serving as the department chair, the successful candidate will be given a teaching release. At the conclusion of the chair appointment, the faculty member will be required to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Rice offers an outstanding environment for basic, applied, and translational research at the interface of engineering and medicine through collaborations with numerous institutions in the adjacent Texas Medical Center.

Qualifications

All candidates must have a PhD degree in bioengineering or a related field and professional experience consistent with the position rank.
