Postdoctoral Scholar in Quantum Computation and Quantum Information

Detailed Description “What You Will Do”

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking postdoctoral researchers to work both independently and in a team environment on numerous aspects of quantum computing, quantum information, and quantum machine learning. The research will concentrate on noisy, intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers and their applications. The positions provide opportunity to perform fundamental research on the applications and limitations of noisy quantum computers, with emphasis in diverse fields such as condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, quantum sensing, and machine learning.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop techniques for exploiting near-term quantum computing such as quantum machine learning and identify applications that benefit from quantum advantage develop noise-resilient algorithms for NISQ computers and theoretical tools to study and mitigate noise that affects the computation on those devices mentor summer students, communicate research results through reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.

Job Requirements “What You Need”

The successful candidate must have a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related field from an accredited college or university (completed within the last 5 years). The candidate must demonstrate substantial research experience in one or more of the fields of quantum information, quantum algorithms, condensed-matter physics, quantum chemistry, simulation of quantum systems and machine learning. The successful candidate must be able to produce high quality research, as evidenced by past publications, reports, presentations, awards, etc. Preference will be given to candidates with strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Notes to Applicants

Please include a curriculum vitae with a publication list - preferably with citation counts - and a detailed cover letter (guideline: 1–2 pages) that describes your research interests and qualifications. The cover letter should address how your qualifications meet the job requirements. You should provide the names of three people who can serve as references for your abilities.

The position is available immediately and has a flexible starting date.

Strong candidates may be eligible for a Laboratory fellowship. See https://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/index.php for more information about postdoc positions at LANL, appointment types and salary guidelines.
