Assistant Professor of Physics

Centenary College of Louisiana invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the Physics Department beginning August 2023.

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship in physics, are deeply committed to teaching in a liberal arts environment, and will direct an active undergraduate research program. While any area of physics may be considered, candidates with a background in experimental optics, biophysics, or data science/informatics will be given priority consideration.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching general physics courses required of all science majors and upper-level courses for Centenary’s robust physics minor and dual-degree program in engineering. The candidate will also be expected to recruit physics and pre-engineering students, with the goal of reestablishing physics as a major at Centenary. Through teaching and advising, the successful candidate will support student success in physics, engineering, geophysics, and biophysics career pathways. A Ph.D. in an appropriate field from an accredited institution is required before starting (though ABD candidates will be considered). Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Physics Department has a well-equipped facility, and opportunities for collaborative research exist both on campus and at the nearby Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. There are excellent funding opportunities, and the College has a high success rate in securing funds for teaching and research.

Centenary College recognizes that diversity is essential to its goal of providing an educational environment where students explore the unfamiliar, invent new approaches to understanding, and connect their work and lives to the world at large. We thus welcome applicants who would add to the College’s diversity of ideas, beliefs, experiences, and cultural backgrounds. centenary.edu. EOE.

To apply, please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, unofficial transcripts from all institutions of higher learning, and the names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three references. Candidate materials should address experience and/or commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and to advancing the College’s commitment to diversity. Official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a background check are required before a candidate can be hired. The Committee will begin reviewing applications immediately and continue until the position is filled.
