Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

Applications are welcome for a postdoctoral position to perform research on the theory of quantum materials and quantum circuits with Prof. Serbyn. The position is supported by the SFB Grant “Correlated Quantum Materials and Solid State Quantum Systems” funded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The project is a collaborative effort of ten different experimental and theoretical research groups (led by F. Assaad, K. Modic, Z. Alpichshev, K. Held, S. Paschen, N. Barisic, G. Katsaros, E. Scheer, A. Higginbotham, and M. Serbyn).

The post is for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting on 1 September 2023 (or any mutually agreed date), with a possible extension to a third year contingent on performance. The position allows considerable flexibility in research topics, with a main focus on quantum materials and circuits.

Successful candidates will conduct research in collaboration with Prof Serbyn and other members of SFB Center. Duties will include carrying out research on topological and nonequilibrium phenomena in quantum materials and quantum circuits; related tasks include (co)preparation of reports and journal publications, presenting research work at conferences and workshops, and representing the group at meetings/seminars. The position also offers opportunity to engage in teaching and other outreach activities.

Candidates must hold (or be about to complete) a PhD/DPhil in physics, or a closely related field. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

·         physics of superconductors, including topological and unconventional superconductivity

·         physics of superconducting devices, Josephson and tunnel junctions, Coulomb blockade in particular in nonequilibrium setting

·         numerical tensor-network methods applied to spin systems or other strongly correlated systems

·        collaboration with experimental groups working on physics of quantum materials

Applications should be submitted via this portal and include your CV (including a list of publications), a brief statement of your research interests, and two preprints or published papers that highlight your past work. In addition, please provide contact details of at least two referees. Although there is no hard deadline for submitting applications, reviewing of applications will commence on the 1st of January, 2023 and continue until the vacancy is filled. For any related enquiries, please contact Prof. Serbyn, maksym.serbyn@ist.ac.at.
