Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Center Director 

Lehigh University is seeking a senior level faculty member to become the Director of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center, effective Fall 2023. 

The ATLSS Center is an internationally-recognized research center focused on the performance of infrastructure, with emphasis on large-structural systems. The Center operates as a self-sustaining research center within Lehigh’s P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, reporting to the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure and Energy. ATLSS has performed funded research for the NSF, US DoT, US DoD, US DoE, and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as numerous other government agencies, private companies, and industry-wide organizations. Large-scale experiments are an important feature of ATLSS, and its laboratories are an important national resource. 

The responsibilities of ATLSS Center Director include: providing broad leadership to envision and successfully pursue innovative new directions, building on the potential of ATLSS and its partners; building and maintaining relationships with external entities from government, industry, professional organizations, and academia; maintaining synergistic relationships with academic departments and interdisciplinary research institutes within Lehigh; providing support for research teams, as well as individual faculty and staff; pursuing a variety of research funding opportunities; being a champion in the professional and academic communities of all the research and education performed at ATLSS, and an advocate of the activities of the ATLSS faculty, students, and staff at Lehigh and in the world. The ATLSS Center Director is also required to engage in teaching, in addition to building and leading a team of graduate students in research. 

Applicants must have: a doctoral degree with a specialization in structural engineering or a closely related field; the rank of Professor or Associate Professor at a research university, or equivalent experience; demonstrated experience in leadership, including leading large, multi-disciplinary teams; a distinguished record of publication in highly-ranked journals in civil engineering, structural engineering, and/or infrastructure engineering; an outstanding record of funding from various sources; a record of effective teaching and mentoring; a strong record of service. Candidates with prior experience with large-scale structural testing are encouraged to apply.
