The C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) at Stony Brook University (http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/itp/www/) seeks applications for one tenure track Assistant Professor position in Theoretical Physics, with a start date of September 1, 2023.  The YITP has special interest in candidates with demonstrated ability to contribute to fundamental areas in quantum field theory and/or string theory and their manifold applications, including quantum gravity and condensed matter physics. (For applicants interested in and focused on quantum information theory, please see an additional position being filled at the YITP, listed at http://apply.interfolio.com/113335 .)

The person holding this position will report to the Director of the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stony Brook University. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in independently funded research characterized by creativity and vision, and in mentorship and educational training with a commitment to inclusivity.

This faculty member will perform research on topics of the member’s choice in quantum field theory and/or string theory. The faculty member may collaborate with any other members of the YITP and Department of Physics and Astronomy with shared interests, as well as with peers at other educational institutes and research laboratories.

The faculty member will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses at the Department of Physics and Astronomy and will be expected to encourage and participate in the research and mentorship of graduate students and postdoctoral associates. The faculty member will participate in departmental, university and professional service.

Required qualifications: PhD degree or foreign equivalent in theoretical physics or closely related field, with an established record of outstanding independent research in fundamental areas of quantum field theory and/or string theory, broadly defined, possibly in addition to other topics in theoretical physics.

Preferred Qualifications: The ability to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the Institute, Department and University, as illustrated, for example, by experience working with a diverse student body.

Application Instructions: Please upload:

  • 1) Cover letter,
  • 2) Curriculum Vitae,
  • 3) Research statement,
  • 4) Diversity, equity, and inclusion statement,
  • 5) Teaching statement,
  • 6) Teaching evaluations, if applicable and available (may be uploaded to “other materials”),
  • 7) Please arrange for a minimum of three letters of recommendation.

Materials can be uploaded to Interfolio using the following link:

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.

About the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics:

Established in 1966, the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) has been a leading center for research in theoretical physics since that time. All YITP faculty members are also members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook, and count among their number the permanent physics faculty of the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics. Research fields currently represented at the YITP include, but are not limited to, quantum field theory, string theory, particle theory, cosmology, quantum information, condensed matter and statistical mechanics. The mission of the YITP is the advancement of knowledge through research, mentorship and training. YITP faculty members teach at the graduate and undergraduate level, and often participate in outreach. The Institute has a tradition of collaboration with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Department of Mathematics and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook, and with Brookhaven National Laboratory, and has many contacts to research centers worldwide.
