Assistant Professor of Physics – Nuclear Theory

The Department of Physics at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in nuclear theory, with an emphasis on hadron spectroscopy. Appointment will begin August 10, 2023.

The Department of Physics is comprised of 25 instructional faculty members and more than 15 physicists in research positions, and currently has three faculty members performing research in nuclear theory and four in nuclear experiment, all of whom maintain a close relationship with nearby Jefferson Lab. The nuclear theorists are members of the Theory Center at Jefferson Lab, which consists of 20 scientists, including bridged, joint, and lab staff members, as well as several postdocs.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate and graduate student body. Teaching expectation is the traditional load for a research university, and successful applicants will possess the skills to teach compelling courses in physics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. During the pre-tenure period, the position will be partially supported by the Theory Center at Jefferson Lab.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D with experience in theoretical hadron physics or a closely related field at the time the appointment begins (August 10, 2023).

Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of scholarly achievement in the field of theoretical hadron spectroscopy and potential as a mentor and instructor for undergraduate and graduate students.

Applicants must apply online at https://jobs.wm.edu/postings/51439. Submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a statement of research interests (including a plan of future research efforts and commentary on how these efforts will impact the field), a statement of teaching interests, and a statement describing previous professional experience or future plans (or both) that demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion. You will be prompted to submit online the names and email addresses of three references who will be contacted by the system with instructions for how to submit a letter of reference.

For full consideration, submit application materials by January 16th, 2023. Applications received after the review date will be considered if needed.

William & Mary and the Department of Physics value diversity (bit.ly/physicsvalues) and look forward to submissions from applicants who actively want to continue to support a culture of belonging and provide an environment that embraces inclusion and diversity. The university is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and encourage applications from women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities. William & Mary conducts background checks on applicants being considered for employment. Information on the degree programs in the Department of Physics may be found at www.wm.edu/as/physics/.
