Position Summary
The Science Librarian engages with the faculty, researchers, staff, and students in assigned academic and research programs to deliver responsive and innovative research and instructional services. The librarian will work with areas in the physical sciences, exact departments dependent on institutional need and the librarian’s experience. The position collaborates with other librarians in the Natural Sciences and Engineering department to provide library services to programs across the sciences, and with librarians in other disciplines to support interdisciplinary research and teaching. They will also collaborate with library colleagues to develop and promote services in support of research data management, repositories, and scholarly communications initiatives, and digital projects. This position also has collection development responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as primary liaison to and actively develops professional relationships with faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas in the sciences
  • Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation for students, faculty, and visiting scholars in assigned areas
  • Teaches research workshops and class sessions in areas of liaison responsibilities and science-related areas
  • Contributes to the Libraries’ partnership with the Thompson Writing Program (e.g., leads library instruction in first-year writing classes)
  • Identifies current and emerging user needs to inform new or existing library programs, services, and partnerships
  • Monitors trends in scholarly publishing in areas of liaison responsibilities to inform outreach, programming, and library collections and services
  • Develops and manages collections in assigned areas; collaborates with other science and engineering librarians to develop and manage collections in support of research and teaching needs of faculty and students
  • Promotes issues and services related to research data management, repositories, data and visualization, publishing, and scholarly communication
  • Provides information services and instruction to faculty, students, and the general public
  • Contributes to other departmental and library goals and initiatives as needed. Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Participates in professional organizations, and serves the library, University, or community through committee work or other professional capacities.

Education:
Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.

Preferred: BA/BS degree in science or engineering or equivalent academic training.

  • One year of experience supporting science researchers and students in an academic, research, or special library
  • Academic coursework and/or work experience in the sciences
  • Experience with collection development
Working Conditions
  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Occasionally positions self to reach high and low shelves
  • Normal office environment
  • Occasional weekend and/or evening shifts required.

Salary and Benefits
Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $55,000-$65,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
