International Comparative Studies Duke University Instructor (Non-Regular Rank)

Job Description

The International Comparative Studies (ICS) program at Duke University invites applications for an Instructor (Non-Regular Rank) that begins January 6, 2023. This is a non-renewable faculty position for one semester. International Comparative Studies is an undergraduate interdisciplinary program that bridges the humanities and social sciences. Students pursue a global studies major that focuses on one of seven world regions through language and interdisciplinary courses. The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in the humanistic and/or social sciences and be engaged in research and teaching that explores comparative/global topics. The selected candidate(s) will teach one or two sections of ICS 195, Comparative Approaches to Global Issues, in Spring 2023. This required class for the ICS major is an introduction to critical transnational studies through several disciplinary approaches. Examines capitalism and neo-liberal globalization and their relationships to culture, politics, economics, and other social forms and outcomes; considers transnationalism "from below"; addresses linear and Western-centric thinking about progress and modernity; focuses a historical lens on political discourses, institutions, and projects to understand them contextually; demonstrates how cultures and identities are dynamically constituted in interaction with historical, material, political, and situational factors; considers how different inequalities and contestations inflect most social formations.. This class carries the (CCI)Cross Cultural Inquiry and (W) Writing course designations for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and must meet the Duke requirements for these modes of inquiry. Given the diversity of our students we value candidates with experience teaching and mentoring under-represented students. To apply, please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a one-page teaching statement, and an example of a syllabus that reflects the goals of Critical Approaches to Global Issues. In addition, the names and contact information of three recommenders must be submitted with the application. All material should be submitted electronically through Academic Jobs Online.
