The Duke Center for Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Infectious Disease (WaSH-AID) is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team. We are a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary Center with a mission of facilitating the development and sustainable deployment of novel technology-based solutions for critical health and environmental challenges.
A qualified applicant will have a Ph.D degree in chemistry, materials science, civil/environmental engineering, or a related discipline and at least 3 years of experience. Prior experience with water/wastewater treatment, membrane filtration technologies, adsorption, materials development and characterization, and/or electrochemistry is highly desirable. It is anticipated that this position will involve approximately 40-50% time performing hands-on laboratory work initially with some variation as projects evolve and an opportunity to shift towards a more supervisory role over time.

Primary responsibilities for the position will include:
• Designing and performing experiments to advance the mission of the Center
• Collaborating with other Center researchers and field partners to facilitate transfer of
technology from the lab into field testing and/or to commercialization
• Preparation of scientific data for project reports, intellectual property filings,
publication in peer-reviewed journals, and/or presentation at seminars and conferences
• Active participation in proposal development and preparation (including establishing
productive relationships with funding entities and their representatives)
• Project management, including budget and timeline tracking and supervision of research staff
Additional requirements for this position will include:
• Willingness and ability to work with human waste (urine and feces) and wastewater
• Willingness and ability to participate in meetings with collaborators which may involve
travel (< 10%) and/or teleconferencing outside of normal work hours due to time differences
• Ability to manage effort and timelines across multiple projects simultaneously
• Good communicative skills
• A desire to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment
