HEALTH EQUITY

The College of Law (COL) at Georgia State University (GSU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the COL at the rank of assistant or associate professor commensurate with experience. For this position, we seek candidates who specialize in legal disciplines consistent with a research focus on achieving health equity and reducing health disparities. Candidates' legal backgrounds can be broad-based (e.g., health law, administrative law, legislation, public law, economic inequality and law, social sciences and law, and social welfare law). This position offers the opportunity to work with communities for favorable health outcomes. This position supports a new interdisciplinary research initiative under the University's Second Century Initiative (2CI) (http://www.gsu.edu/secondcentury/). Candidates for this position should have strong interdisciplinary research interests that will enable their engagement with the COL's Center for Law, Health & Society (http://law.gsu.edu/clhs/) and the Institute of Public Health in GSU's College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) (http://publichealth.gsu.edu/).

BACKGROUND: The COL and CHHS at GSU were awarded an interdisciplinary cluster hire of three new faculty positions (1 appointed in COL; 2 appointed in CHHS) around the research theme of achieving health justice through improving health equity and reducing health disparities. These new faculty will provide a major enhancement in GSU's capacity to explore the social, economic, epidemiologic, and legal dimensions of health justice. For more information about the proposal which was the basis of this award, entitled "Building Capacity in Health Justice Research: A Collaborative Research Effort to Reduce Health Disparities," see http://law.gsu.edu/agora/index/recruitment/health_equity/proposal.

HIGHLIGHTS: The 2CI cluster hiring builds on the existing strengths and collaborations between the COL and CHHS. The COL hosts a nationally ranked health law program, and CHHS hosts the Partnership for Urban Health Research (http://urbanhealth.gsu.edu/), which seeks to understand how the urban environment affects the health and well-being of people who reside and work in the metropolitan Atlanta area. The COL's Center for Law, Health & Society (http://law.gsu.edu/clhs/) is a research catalyst for analyzing and developing laws and policies that impact the health and well being of individuals, families, and communities. The Center offers a broad educational curriculum in health law, as well as sponsors a wide variety of public programs and events. The HeLP Legal Services Clinic is a live-client clinic at the law school and is part of an innovative medical-legal community collaboration providing free legal services to low-income children and their families (http://law.gsu.edu/clhs/index/education/HeLP_legal_services_clinic).

Applicants should have a Juris Doctor degree, excellent academic background, and a proven record of (or demonstrated potential for) outstanding scholarship, teaching, and professional engagement. Applications (cover letter and resume) are accepted electronically through www.academicjobsonline.org.  Georgia State University, a unit of the University System of Georgia, is an Equal Opportunity Educational Institution and an EEO/AA employer. For more information, please visit the COL faculty recruitment Web site at http://law.gsu.edu/recruitment, as well as the COL Web site more generally at http://law.gsu.edu/.   For inquiries (not applications) about this position, please contact Professor Charity Scott, Director, Center for Law, Health & Society, at recruitment2ci@gsu.edu.
