| Job Description: |
| The MIT Physics Department invites applications for a junior faculty position in astrophysics. Our search is unrestricted with respect to area of specialization. Current astrophysics faculty are active in optical, radio, X-ray, and gravitational wave astronomy; in broad areas of theoretical astrophysics and cosmology; in the understanding of dark matter and dark energy; in studies of exoplanets; and in space plasma physics. MIT hosts the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, whose faculty and research staff contribute instrumentation for and conduct research using several facilities including the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, the Murchison Widefield Array, the Magellan telescopes in Chile, and LIGO.
Faculty members at MIT conduct research, teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses, and supervise graduate and undergraduate participation in research. Candidates must show promise in teaching as well as in research. Preference will be given to applicants at the assistant professor level. More senior appointments will be considered only in exceptional cases. The application deadline is December 1, 2010. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a brief description of research interests and goals (the latter not to exceed 3 pages), and arrange for three letters of reference to be uploaded. Only web submissions will be accepted. Any enquiries should be directed to Professor Deepto Chakrabarty, Search Committee Chair, deepto@mit.edu. MIT is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. |
