The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2017, but is flexible and negotiable.   The research area of interest is pharmacology and/or toxicology with preference given to candidates with specialization in neuropharmacology and/or neurotoxicology.

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is in the midst of a transformational period of growth supported by the $1.7B Next Generation Connecticut ( and the $1B Bioscience Connecticut ( investments and a bold new Academic Plan: Path to Excellence (  ). As part of these initiatives, UConn has hired more than 450 new faculty at all ranks during the past three years. We are pleased to continue these investments by inviting applications for this new faculty position in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Under new leadership, the UConn School of Pharmacy is embarking on an ambitious plan to achieve recognition in the top 10% of pharmacy schools within the next five years by synergizing state-of-the-art physical infrastructure, preeminent faculty accomplishments, and targeted five new hires. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences   is housed in a 200,000 square foot state-of-the-art building in the science quad of the university and has a long history of drug discovery, drug formulation, and drug safety evaluation. Departmental faculty include two industry distinguished endowed chairs in mechanistic toxicology and in pharmaceutical technology as well as two Board of Trustees Professors ( Nationally, departmental faculty serve as chairs of NIH study sections, journal editors, and society presidents and have received prestigious awards for research and teaching. Faculty expertise encompasses medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, and pharmaceutics. Robust connections to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies provide significant support and synergy for departmental research projects. Substantial recent State funding supports the expansion of drug discovery in a private-public enterprise. Our collaborations with the Department of Pharmacy Practice, with its established Evidence-Based Practice Center, give us additional strength in translational science.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through securing significant extramural funding and publication of independent research in high-quality journals.  In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate, professional and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. The successful candidate will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.


  • Must hold a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology/toxicology, neuroscience or a related field from an accredited institution. 
  • Demonstration of, or clear evidence of potential for, a strong extramurally funded research program in neuropharmacology or neurotoxicology.
  • Expertise to teach in the core curriculum of the graduate pharmacology/toxicology program and be able to teach neuropharmacology-related material in the PharmD curriculum. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.


  • Preferred areas of research focus include neuropharmacology and/or neurotoxicology.
  • At least 2 years of post-doctoral experience in an academic, industrial or similar position.
  • Demonstrated record of significant scholarly productivity.
  • Potential for collaboration with pharmaceutical sciences faculty at UConn.
  • Potential for collaboration with neuroscience faculty at UConn.
  • An educational background relevant to, or previous teaching in a PharmD curriculum. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Active participation in scientific societies related to neuropharmacology and/or neurotoxicology. 
  • Proven commitment to working within a diverse environment.


This is a full-time (9-month appointment) tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the University of Connecticut main campus in Storrs, CT.  The desired starting date is August 23, 2017, but is flexible and negotiable. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload.
