The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Residence, Assistant Director of Athletic Bands. The start date for the position is August 23, 2017. 

The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut is a fully-accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music with 20 full-time faculty members, 27 part-time faculty members, 150 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate students. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, composition, music history, and music theory, as well as preparation for the music education program through the Neag School of Education. Assist with the directing, planning, organization, instruction, rehearsal, performances and daily operations of the University of Connecticut Marching Band and Pep Bands as assigned by Director of Bands. Administer and supervise the Marching Band instrument inventory. Cooperate effectively and positively with Division of Athletics personnel to coordinate and organize band participation at athletic events.  Supervise graduate assistants and student workers. Work with students in marching and pep bands and groups related to those bands to achieve success in every aspect of the band program. Conduct ensembles as appropriate. Contribute to the mission of the Department of Music by assisting with activities and events and teaching as appropriate.  Other duties as assigned by the Department Head.


  1. Master’s Degree in Music or Music Education
  2. Experience as a director or assistant director of collegiate marching and/or athletic band.


  1. Skill in organization of band program, trip and activity organization and planning.
  2. Experience in collegiate hockey and basketball pep band.
  3. Experience with marching and movement training.
  4. Experience with personnel management.
  5. Experience with managing events and maintaining relations with athletic marketing personnel.
  6. Knowledge of social media and experience with on-line management tools.
  7. Experience with conducting/directing of musical ensembles.


This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track renewable appointment at the Storrs campus with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2017. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
