College of Science

Benedictine University invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Science.  The position will report to the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs with a start date of June 1, 2018.

The College of Science is located on Benedictine University’s main campus in Lisle, IL near what is considered to be the region’s “technology and research corridor” 20 miles west of Chicago.  The College of Science houses Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, and Physical Sciences, offering 20 undergraduate majors and two masters programs in clinical exercise physiology and integrative physiology.   In addition, the College offers an interdisciplinary program in biochemistry and molecular biology, a number of pre-professional programs in partnership with Northwestern University, Rush Medical Center, Hines-Veterans Hospital, and Midwestern University, and an engineering bachelors program in partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology.  

 

The College of Science seeks a dynamic leader who will support high-quality teaching, active learning, research, and professional development.

 

The responsibilities of the Dean of the College of Science include the following:

·        Provide vision and strategic direction to the college consistent with the mission of Benedictine University and its strategic plan.

·        Facilitate faculty and staff development and cooperation among academic units in the college and across the university.

·        Oversee the development and assessment of new and existing programs to ensure academic quality and external recognition.

·        Supervise, evaluate, and provide resources to faculty and staff in collaboration with department and program chairs.

·        Establish external relationships to further program development and recognition, expand the college’s resource base through grants, contracts, and fundraising.

·        Prepare and manage the college budget.

·        Work collaboratively with the university’s enrollment management along with marketing and communication to ensure program growth in the recruitment of students.

·        Work collaboratively with the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs to enhance operational efficiency and the college’s profile.

Qualifications:

·        Earned Ph.D. in a discipline in the college and credentials appropriate to hold the rank of full professor.

·        Preferred five years of demonstrated administrative academic experience in higher education (dean, associate dean, program director, department chair, or equivalent).

·        Experience with multiple learning platforms to include face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats and the emerging educational needs of stakeholders within the science disciplines and industry.

·        Experience in data-informed decision making to guide program development, implementation, evaluation, and quality improvement.

·        Experience in building external relationships in securing grants, contracts and fundraising.

·        Experience in the supervision, evaluation and professional development of the faculty and staff.

·        Leadership skills rooted in integrity and transparency that embody shared governance and effective decision-making. 

·        Excellent communication skills necessary to promote positive collaborations with multiple disciplines within the college and across the university to include community partners and students.

·        Experience in budgeting and acquisition of resources, preferably experience in responsibility centered budgeting.
