The University of Oregon’s East Asian Languages and Literatures Department invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Korean Literature and Culture, to begin in fall 2018. We seek candidates specializing in modern and/or contemporary Korean literature and culture. Competitive applicants will be capable of outstanding research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The normal teaching load is five courses across three ten-week quarters, which may include both large lectures and small seminars. Teaching expertise must include modern and/or contemporary Korean literature and culture, with ability to teach earlier periods also a plus. We are especially interested in scholars who will enhance the department’s existing strengths in the study of East Asian literatures and cultures, and who can contribute to the further development of Korean Studies.

We are a diverse and growing department with strengths in the study of modern and pre-modern languages and literatures of China, Japan and Korea. The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers a Korean Minor, an MA in Korean Studies and graduate programs in Korean Linguistics. Undergraduate students may also pursue a Major in Asian Studies with a Korean focus through the interdisciplinary Asian Studies program. Our programs receive additional support from The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, a research and outreach center that houses a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) for East Asian Studies.

We particularly welcome applications from scholars who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in Korean Literature or related field in hand by time of appointment. Salary is competitive.
